About Portsmouth Connex

Connex overview 6-2014Portsmouth Connex is a series of proposed activity routes throughout Portsmouth, and its surrounding communities.  The routes connect key destinations focusing on designated lanes (bicycle/running/walking) through the Portsmouth Front Street Mural District and shared lanes leading to area parks, key entertainment, historical sites, hospitals, shopping, and beyond.

Connex efforts were spearheaded in April, 2013 by Shawnee Recreation Trail, Inc. (SRT) in collaboration with the Scioto County Health Coalition and Portsmouth City Council.

In addition to Portsmouth Connex, there are also several other planned sections – including West Side Connex and New Boston Connex. The future is wide-open for extended Connex routes all around our community.  It is expected that the project will occur over a series of years.

History

SRT, a non-profit organization since 2006, was created to develop bicycle trails in Scioto County and Portsmouth area. Former president Linda Liner spearheaded a successful community-wide fundraising campaign, raising nearly $45,000 toward the project. Liner moved away from the area, but SRT Board members Jeff Smith, Esther Downey, and Barb Bradbury continued the effort.  The board has since been revised and the current board members are Barb Bradbury, President; Wendi Waugh, Vice President and Media Chair; Gina Chabot, Design Chair; Jeff Smith, Treasurer; Ellen Berry, Secretary; Esther Downey, Ben Davis, and Steve Rodeheffer.  The group also decided that SRT needed to develop a name for the project.  Several individuals had a hand in the overall branding of Connex and the design was created by Amanda Eaton and the Shawnee State University Office of Communications.

Connex’ goals are multi-faceted and centered on improving the economic viability of Portsmouth.  One of the first projects that the community is likely to see progress is designated lanes (bicycle/running/walking) connecting Shawnee State University and the Portsmouth Front Street Mural District.  Existing groups such as the Portsmouth Murals Inc. and Main Street Portsmouth have been involved.  The Connex group is also focused on shared lanes leading to area parks, key entertainment, historical sites, hospitals, shopping, and beyond.  Another community group is specifically working on a vision to revitalize Mound Park with new and existing interested groups and yet another sub-group is working on some West Side routes.

Connex encourages the community to get involved.

Portsmouth Connex primary overarching objectives include:

  1. Promote activity and access along the riverfront and Front Street mural district;
  2. Encourage support for businesses  “along the route”  by providing cyclists, runners, walkers  safe and marked routes to businesses, schools and the University, parks, hospitals, and other key destinations;
  3. Provide evidence of Portsmouth’s transformation into a bicycle-friendly, health conscious and forward-thinking community.
